Self-driving taxis being tested in NYC, report says
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Although we still have some time before we see driverless cars in every city, testing has already begun on New York City streets. As shared in a post on X by Waymo, a driverless rideshare service, the company has begun testing in the city.
"Fewer than ten" Waymo cars are operating in Manhattan and "parts of Downtown Brooklyn," a company spokesperson told Crain's.
Waymo has grown massively since its creation in 2009 as Google’s Self-Driving Car Project. 3 Waymo drove vehicles manually through Manhattan in 2021 to map the city’s streets.
State law currently prevents the cars from operating without a driver behind the wheel. Waymo is pushing to change that.
