As we mark Memorial Day, honoring those who gave their lives to defend democracy, I can’t help but reflect on how fragile that democracy now feels.

Jan. 30 was a day that many Iraqis will remember for the rest of their lives. For the first time in more than 40 years, they tasted democracy when they voted for their National Assembly.
