The redbud’s Latin name, Cercis, is equally pedestrian: it is taken from the Greek kerkis, which means “a weaver’s shuttle” and refers to the shape of the tree’s seed pods.

The eastern redbud has earned the nickname “Judas tree” because of its resemblance to the tree of that name (Cercis siliquastrum) which is found in Europe and parts of Asia and Africa.
