ST. LOUIS — City officials announced Friday that the public swimming pool at Fairground Park has been stripped by vandals and will not reopen later this month as planned.

In June, 1949, Fairgrounds Park Pool was integrated. But Life Magazine reports when thirty to forty black kids showed up to swim, thousands of white people in St. Louis showed up to riot.

ST. LOUIS – Last year, thieves forced the Fairground Park pool to shut down for the entire summer. The pool, which opened in 1958, and its predecessor date back more than a century.

The St. Louis Mayor’s Office reports the pool at Fairground Park has been vandalized. Much of the metal components, like plumbing, pool filtration and sinks, have suffered major damage.
