The name is an homage to the fourth mainline Super Mario Bros. game, also called Super Mario World, which was released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990 in Japan and 1991 in the US.

The Luma, a breakout character from The Super Mario Bros. Movie, constantly makes jokes about dying that, surprisingly, stem back to the character’s origins in the Wii game Super Mario Galaxy.
