The researchers monitored 142 non-parents while they slept and recorded how often they woke up in response to the sound of a baby crying.

She had been put to bed around 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. on April 24, and both parents were awake for some hours after that, with the mother staying up until around 2 a.m.

Over a two year period researchers collected around 200,000 crying sounds from approximately 100 new-born babies, and uploaded them to an online database.
