Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said he wouldn’t block a Republican government funding bill, reducing the odds of a government shutdown Friday night. If the Senate passes the bill, it would then go to President Donald Trump for a signature. A shutdown occurs after 11:59 p.m. ET Friday if no law is enacted by then.

When President Trump entered his first term, stocks were steadily marching upward. This time, the trajectory has inverted.

The U.S. stock market indexes pulled back their earlier increases on Thursday morning because of rising trade tariff ambiguity and pending job statistics reports. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 335 points while both the S&P 500 and NASDAQ Composite lost their respective values by 1% and 1.

The 10% trigger for a correction is an arbitrary, round-number threshold. But it serves as a signal that investors have turned pointedly more pessimistic about the market.
