At the time, nerve transfer surgeries were not as well known. After a consultation, Kale went and received two surgeries from New York-based surgeon Dr. Scott Wolfe.

Dr. Wolfe performed nerve transfers to each arm, followed by tendon transfer surgery a year later to restore function in Kale's hands and enable him to lift his arm over his head.
