Researchers at Oregon State University have developed a new way to measure the water content of snow. OSU doctoral student Christina Aragon measures snow depth and snow density in Alaska.

They measure the height (or stage) of a river as well as the volume of water flow, known as discharge. This data is critical for detecting rising water levels and issuing timely flood warnings.
