Amazon.com Inc.’s cloud unit is rolling out components it says will make data centers run more efficiently, a move that could help address the growing strain power-hungry server farms are putting on the electrical grid.

Amazon ( AMZN) is giving its massive Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers a facelift. The company announced it’s improving the efficiency, availability, and design of its enormous computing facilities to keep them up and running for its customers and provide them with the kind of processing power they need to run new generative AI applications.

Amazon Web Services (NASDAQ:AMZN) unveiled a new set of data center components to support artificial intelligence and improve efficiencies, as well as several cloud migrations, during the first day of its re:Invent event in Las Vegas today.

Uploading data to a cloud service can be time-consuming and may carry security risks. Amazon says its new data sites can fix that.

AWS says that the new portals—which it calls “data transfer terminals”—are “secure, physical locations for quick transfer of data to AWS.” To use a terminal, you’ll need to reach out to Amazon and reserve a time to visit one of the company’s several locations.

Invent 2024 conference Sunday evening in Las Vegas, Amazon announced a somewhat unusual new service for Amazon Web Services (AWS) customers: Data Transfer Terminal, a set of physical locations where customers can plug in their storage devices to upload data to the AWS cloud.
