Operated from 1959-67, Camp Century was abandoned after officials realized the ice wasn’t as stable as previously thought. Since then, it’d largely been forgotten about – that is, until NASA accidentally captured an image of the subterranean base in April 2024.

NASA radar accidentally finds secret Cold War 'city under the ice' in Greenland
The CIRES-led study used ground-penetrating radar to estimate the amount of waste under the ice. The team found that the waste at Camp Century covers about 136 acres, about the size of 100 football fields, and contains an estimated 53,000 gallons of diesel fuel and 63,000 gallons of wastewater.

NASA unexpectedly discovered a city under the Greenland ice sheet
In April 2024, NASA scientist Chad Greene and a team of engineers flew over the Greenland Ice Sheet, using radar to study the ice beneath. While flying east of Pituffik Space Base, Greene captured a photo of the ice sheet’s surface, and the radar unexpectedly detected something buried beneath the ice.
