Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has called a special election to fill the seat formerly held by Democratic House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, who authorities say was assassinated at her Twin Cities home​ in June.

Brooklyn Park voters will vote to fill the vacant seat of Rep. Melissa Hortman, who was killed last month in a politically motivated assassination.

Candidates have until July 22 to file for office in the special election for House District 34B in the Brooklyn Park area.

WCCO’s Susie Jones sat down for an interview with Gov. Tim Walz. They talk about his possible attempt at a third consecutive term in office, the political divisions facing Minnesota and the country, the assassination of Melissa Hortman and more.

Hortman represented House District 34B, a district that includes Brooklyn Park, as well as parts of Champlin and Coon Rapids.
