Verlander made his unofficial Giants debut Monday, toeing the mound against Colorado Rockies top prospect Chase Dollander. Speaking to reporters, Dollander mentioned how strange it felt pitching against someone who threw his first MLB pitch in 2005. “I was four years old at the time,” Dollander acknowledged.

Verlander said his average velocity in spring training has a tendency to oscillate from year to year. Early in his career, Verlander topped out at 92-93 mph, but would ramp up to triple digits by the time the season started. Other years, Verlander would sit in the mid-90s and maintain into the season.

When the San Francisco Giants signed Justin Verlander in January, they knew they were getting one of the oldest players in baseball.
