We usually talk about Winnipeg’s best trades in terms of Paul Stastny, the two-way centre who was an excellent fit on the 2018 Western Conference finalist Jets. We spent last spring talking about the Jets’ acquisition of Sean Monahan and his perfect fit on the top power play.
For the first time in franchise history, Winnipeg has won nine consecutive games. It’s the longest win streak among all teams this season. The Jets have outscored their opponents 39-19 over these nine games. Their power play has gone 8-for-21 (38.0%) in the nine-game streak. Winnipeg has scored four or more goals in seven of the nine games.
But Winnipeg’s Black hockey history is no joke. The Manitoba provincial capital has a rich history of Black players who were born or raised there, played for the Winnipeg Jets or other NHL teams, or achieved success in minor leagues or internationally.
Winnipeg Jets fans are witnessing one of the team’s best seasons — including the 1.0 version — as the NHL team is battling with the Washington Capitals for first overall with just more than two months left before the Stanley Cup playoffs begin.
