With egg prices soaring, the Trump administration is planning a new strategy for fighting bird flu that stresses vaccinations and tighter biosecurity instead of killing off millions of chickens when the disease strikes a flock.

Josh Burkholder, co-owner of The Egg Basket in Macedonia, Illinois, in his first year of business, is dealing with an egg shortage and the danger of the bird flu.

Maurice Pitesky, an associate professor at the U.C. Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, said with prices reaching almost a dollar an egg, investing in a backyard flock might actually save money in the long run.
