An appeal from Apaches who want to halt a massive copper mining project on federal land in Arizona that they hold sacred has been rejected by the Supreme Court.
The company — a subsidiary of international mining giants Rio Tinto and BHP — estimates the mine will generate $1 billion a year for Arizona’s economy and create thousands of jobs.
The mine says it needs additional capacity to store tailings to continue mining for copper and molybdenum in the decades ahead.
