Sectarian violence has killed at least 130 people and wounded 200 others in Pakistan’s northwest in the last 10 days, officials said Sunday.

The clashes overnight between Sunni and Shiite tribes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province came a day after gunmen ambushed a convoy of vehicles in the area.

PESHAWAR : Sectarian feuding in northwest Pakistan killed 13 more people, a local government official said today, as warring Sunnis and Shi’ites defied repeated ceasefire orders in recent conflict claiming 124 lives.

The death toll from sectarian clashes in northwest Pakistan has risen to 133, the provincial government said on Dec. 2, as tribal elders failed to ensure a truce between the feuding Sunni and Shiite Muslim communities.

Over 80 people were killed and scores more injured in recent sectarian clashes in northwestern Pakistan. Experts say historic rivalries, extremist Islamist groups, and political marginalization are to blame.

Pakistani authorities say they have negotiated a seven-day ceasefire after more than 80 people were killed in renewed sectarian violence in the north-west of the country. Another 156 are said to have been wounded in three days of fighting in the tribal district of Kurram, near the Afghan border.

Authorities in Pakistan reported Monday that armed clashes between rival Sunni and Shiite Muslim tribes in a northwestern district bordering the border with Afghanistan have resulted in at least 133 deaths within the past two weeks.
