Anticipating heavy rains, schools in Tamil Nadu may close today. The IMD's orange alert warns of intense showers in districts like Chennai and Tiruvallur

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast more spells of rain in Chennai and districts, including Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Tiruvarur, and Thanjavur.

Heavy rain in Chennai and surrounding districts has filled reservoirs to their maximum levels, prompting authorities to issue a flood alert. The Water Resources Department (WRD) has released 1,000 cusecs of water from the Poondi reservoir into the Kosasthalaiyar River as a precaution.

Heavy rainfall is sweeping across southern India, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, due to a new low-pressure system. School closures have been announced in some areas. The IMD has issued orange and yellow alerts for several districts,

IMD has issued a yellow alert across Tamil Nadu with heavy to moderate rains forecasted today. School holidays were declared in 11 districts, including Chennai and Villupuram.

The IMD has also said that heavy to very heavy rains are expected in Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai districts along with isolated thunderstorms and lightning.

Heavy rains across Tamil Nadu have led to school closures in several districts, including Chennai, on Thursday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert, predicting moderate rains and light thunderstorms in parts of the state.

According to the IMD bulletin on Dec. 12, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are very likely to witness isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Northwestwards in the coming days, it is expected to bring heavy(7-11cms) to very heavy rain(12-20cms) in 28 districts of Tamil Nadu, and the adjoining Union Territory of Puducherry.

Heavy rainfall is expected in isolated areas of Thanjavur, Sivagangai, Pudukkottai, and Tiruchirappalli districts on Wednesday.

Today, heavy to very heavy rain is expected to pour over isolated places in Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai and Mayiladuthurai and Karaikal.
